Case Study - Oxford Instruments
3D product video
Made at Velo. Role: concept, storyboard, client presentations, animation. Creative direction: Matt Scutt. 2023.
The brief. Oxford Instruments makes high-precision instruments for materials analysis. A competitor had raised the visual bar in their category, and they came to Velo wanting that calibre. Openly skeptical, based on past work, that it could be delivered.
The work. My proposal: treat the instrument as a premium object, not a piece of lab equipment. I set up the lighting to draw light over the product, and use its new shadows to make it more interesting. Putting the product on a literal pedestal, and gently animated the product like a flagship smartphone. I developed the concept, storyboarded it, presented to the client myself, and animated the film. The product itself was rebuilt from the client's engineering CAD file: geometry cleaned, subtle imperfections modeled in, materials developed to match reference photography.
The result. The video won over a client who arrived doubting us, and became the template for 4 further videos across their product range.
